Chelonia myda or green sea turtle was almost hunted to extinction in Hawaiian waters. However their population has gradually recovered in part because in 1978 all sea turtles in Hawaii came under the protection of the federal Endangered Species Act which prohibits capturing hunting harassing or injuring these magnificent ancient reptiles.
Didnt know turtles were cold-blooded reptiles? Well come along buddy dust the sand off your feet and lets talk story about the honu.
Green sea turtles are believed to have lived during the time of the dinosaurs. Their lifespan is not known but in the wild honu take about 25 years to become mature adults. The females of the species are believed to return to nest at the beach were they were born almost always in the northwest Hawaiian islands (French Frigate Shoals). They then return to the main Hawaiian islands to live and feed and we in the islands are blessed with their stately and calm presence in the ocean and on the beach where they can often be seen basking in the sun.
Adult honu are herbivores or plant eaters and are not a threat to other marine wildlife. Their diet of limu or sea algae colors their body fat green hence their name. Juvenile honu however like to eat jellyfish and can mistake floating plastic trash for their favorite meal so please dispose of your beach rubbish carefully.
