NEW PROVIDENCE The capital city of The Bahamas is Nassau, which is on the east side of 21-mile long New Providence. It has a natural harbour which is sheltered by 3-mile long Paradise Island. This harbour was the center attraction of settlers in the late 1600's. Nassau has fortresses, mansions, cathedrals and churches. Natives of Nassau are locally called Nassuvians. Paradise Island was once called Hogg Island. Now it is exclusively built up for the enjoyment of tourists, with fabulous resorts, a famous aquarium, a golf course, restaurants, shops and a casino.
